Analog Flux, Volume Two: A Legacy of German Krautrock, Part 1

MP3 320: Podcast ( Right-Click, “Save As” )

Volume two of AnalogFlux showcases German artists who influenced and shaped the Krautrock scene.

Can's album "Monster Movie" is one of the more influential Krautrock releases. The group blends psychedelia, free jazz, world music and blues in this debut release. Particularly cool is the album cover.

Holger Czukay, later to become influential ambient artist and pioneer of sampling, wields the bass here, while Malcolm Mooney, American singer and artist, takes vocals to a new, strange and dare I say FUNKY place. Somewhat reminiscent of the Velvet Underground, Can's "Monster Movie" was an underground classic.

In this podcast, Can performs "Mary, Mary So Contrary."

Other artists in this podcast include: Frumpy, featuring french Keyboardist Jean-Jacques Kravetz, and the song "Rosalie, Part One" from their debut 1970 album "All Will Be Changed.” And it was.

Next up, it's "Kollaps" from Gila's self-titled 1971 debut, a space-rock jaunt reminiscent of early Pink Floyd.

Then we visit Kin Ping Meh, performing "Sometime" from their self-titled 1971 debut, followed by Cluster's "Im Suden" from the 1972 album "Cluster Two."

Finally, we hear from Grobschnitt, performing the song "Travelling" from their debut self-titled 1972 release.

Krautrock is a fascinating genre of diverse sounds. No two pieces are alike, yet one can easily understand the common themes inherent to the artists of the era: Deconstruction, Reconstruction, Freedom. More next time...
