Djembe Madness!

Starving Artist Shirt

I've decided to take the idea of the ridiculously expensive Pirate Bay tee shirt and incorporate it into my plan for self-sustainance. This is an ART PROJECT.

Yes, you can help support a starving artist right here in the Midwest (or Midsouth if you prefer). Just bid on this amazing, one-of-a-kind "Starving Artist Superfund" Tee Shirt. If you win the auction, I will gladly place your Company Logo, Organizational logo, or other identifiable marker on the back if you send me a letter of permission to do so.

This is your only opportunity to own a piece of artistic history. I will imbibe the cloth with my creative energies and you can wear it to all your big corporate events. Act Fast! Buy Now! It's a STEAL!

Weekend Recap in Images

Check out this image collage I prepared to commemorate one exciting evening of live music! Click on the image for larger version.

That's Novachild and Basira on percussion :)

One of the great challenges of the evening was the fact that Shades of Brown had us double-booked with another artist, Tim Casey (whom we later discovered is an old acquaintance of Jonas). Wires were crossed. Everybody showed up with a lot of gear, and at the beginning there was some initial confusion. But Jonas Adrian, in his capacity of diplomat extraordinaire, was able to work out an amazing solution. EVERYBODY PLAYS, EVERYBODY WINS! I was thrilled to witness such a serendipitous gathering of musical bliss.

It was a wonderful evening. Josh James was splendiforous, Jonas and Co. were effing brilliant, and Tim Casey was fantastic. I love it when things work out so perfectly!

Good things are happening. Y'all might want to pay attention, LOL.

Bad Album Covers

Over at the Museum of Bad Album Covers, you can see this:

Sadly, and truly, I actually own TWO Geraldine and Ricky albums. I honestly don't know how they managed to creep into my vinyl collection, but they are there, and upon noticing them I simply could not send them away to the dump. The creepiness factor alone is worth the space they consume.

The Answers You Are Looking For

This was posted on a friend's myspace blog the other day, and I think it deserves to be cross-posted here, too.... (edited for relevance)

Back in 1993, when the old Classical station was still on the radio here in Tulsa, every Saturday night would feature "Burning the Midnight Oil," a late-night traditional Jazz show. It was a 2-hour stretch from midnight to 2AM, and rarely would I miss it.

The DJ was this older fellow with a cool, mellow voice and he would play some of the greatest Jazz records ever made. I would usually light a candle, brew some good joe, a packet of Camels, grab my pen and steno pad and start plugging away with my poetry.

I cherish those moments like no others. My brain would indeed get stretchy, and funky. It was about letting go of routine and tapping into the intuitive vein. Sometimes it takes a little push to get there, but once I am there everything is suddenly so clear and easy to see and feel and sort out. A single vowel has the greatest of meanings; the rhythm of life pulsating alone in the dark by candlelight with me and my brain and the crazy jazz cat on the radio and my intimate thoughts and raging thoughts and troubles and delights all rolled up into one grand blissful cacophany.

It doesn't really get any better than that.

Veddy Interesting: 1000tags.com

It's suddenly a trend again - special, overly-simple web pages that generate a rather large amount of capital for their clever owners. And the next in line is 1000tags.com.

I'm taking the bait. I'm going to write up something about them here so I can get a free 'shared tag.' Basically, what this means is that I pick a word or short phrase, they add it to the page and a random listing of results are given for that particular word or phrase.

If it gains in popularity, it may be worthwhile. But if not, it may be a complete waste of everybody's time. I am a firm believer in the power of Google to pick up my key phrases, however, so I'm going to give it a shot. After all, thanks to my work on uncovering the cloaked end-times seminars of a particular 7th Day Adventist movement, this journal entry is #2 in google ranking when searching for Cherokee Seventh Day Adventist's Church.

Here's another testament to the power of Google: when I heard about Michael Bay's film The Island, I wondered why the plot elements were so similar to another film, Parts: The Clonus Horror. So I wrote this post. I received an email from the creator of Clonus, and a few months later news sources reported that a lawsuit was filed against Michael Bay. The volatile nature of effective googling is thus laid before you. I don't pretend to have anything to DO with the lawsuit, as I find both movies to be equally disengaging. However, as a fan of MST3K, I do feel a certain amount of loyalty toward the original. :)

If I can have that sort of luck with 1000tags.com, but on a grander scale, it's worth my time and effort for sure. I will gladly post the results here over time.

Chick Tract Parody

While not as good as the now-removed "Who Will Be Eaten First," Darque Dungeon is a bit more culturally relevant (if you consider the pointless sensitivities of popular goth 'sub' culture to be relevant).

Darque Dungeon awaits!

If you really want to see "Who Will Be Eaten First," I'm certain you can find a copy of it somewhere, either via bittorrent or via hard googling. I've got it on my HD, and someday I'm going to print up a few dozen copies and leave them in strategic places like restrooms and bars. I'm even tempted to post it here. Fair Use should apply.

Update: Never mind. Here is a rogue copy for your viewing pleasure.

And here is my last post on chick tracts if you're interested in my take on the whole thing.

And here are some authentic Chick Tracts if you don't have enough mind-numbing, tasteless religious bigotry in your life already.

Thanks to Henridellic for pointing out the new parody! I LOVE Jack Chick parodies. Better than Christmas!

Birthday Poem for a Friend

Standing on toes
over tall, craggly peaks
to nod at your richness
nothing between but
a matched pair of birds
spinning in circles

The sun blows out
Fast asleep again
another memory
another long dream to
call you to the warm self
that lies deeper
than a womb
or a sparkling well

Random Bits: Doctor Who on SFC!

I've not been terribly pleased with SciFi Channel's handling of my other favorite series', Mystery Science Theater 3000, Farscape, Invisible man to name just a few. They were killed while they still had a good few years left in them. But that's the way it goes in TV, I suppose. However, as a fan of genre programming, it's not easy to accept the fate of a cherished and much-loved series.

Still, I'm very relieved that SOMEONE is picking up the new series of Doctor Who in the US, as it deserves to be seen by more people. Yes, it's quirky. Yes, it's very very British and much of the cheeky moments will fly right over most American heads (as clueless and dim as most of us are about, well, reality in general). But it's just so exciting and fun, and Eccleston was effing brilliant as the 9th Doctor (and after watching the Christmas Special, and catching the mini-series Casanova, I'm convinced that David Tennant will probably be the best Doctor yet).

Read the SFC Article here. And thank them for finally supporting Doctor Who. God knows they've been ignoring the classic episodes for far too long as it is.

My World Has Been Destroyed!

"Why shouldn't I have a purely vegetarian drink? Why shouldn't I take vegetables in their highest form, so to speak? The modest vegetarians ought to stick to wine or beer, plain vegetable drinks, instead of filling their goblets with the blood of bulls and elephants, as all conventional meat-eaters do, I suppose"--Dalroy.
I should just give up. Life has become unbearable now that I've discovered that my favorite 'stand-by' Ale, Newcastle Brown, is not suitable for vegetarians. Read this letter (look in the middle of the page).

The Vegetarian Beers page has completely destroyed my world! Not only is Newcastle Brown not sutable, but also Guinness, Bass, Boddingtons, McEwan's, Courage. All of my favorites. This is a sad, depressing day for this beer connoisseur.

At least Harp is suitable. And Kingfisher is pretty good with a plate of curry. And thanks to my old friend Johnny, I'm a fan of Leinenkugel's Honey Weiss as well, and it's safe. It's also good to know that all those cubes of piss-water (Natural Light) we inhaled as college brats were completely suitable for vegetarians. While we were busy being drunken bastards, raising a ruckus, being rude and proud and unusually kind to just about every female that walked by, we were at least drinking ethically.

See, what makes them non-veg is usually an 'ingredient' called isinglass finings (a solution of collagen prepared from fish). From the Scottish & Newcastle letter on said page:
Isinglass finings have been used to clarify beers for centuries. The collagen associates with yeast cells and causes the yeast to drop to the bottom of the tank of cask. The sediment remains behind and is not part of the finished product. No suitable substitute has been found, which is why nearly all breweries still use them.
Yes, my carnivore friends, this still means that they are not vegetarian.

Fortunately or unfortunately (haven't decided yet), Old Peculiar isn't on the list at all. Neither is Strongbow Cider, probably my favorite that I've tried so far. I will have to ask the author of said page to add them to his list and see if he can gracefully discover the truth. I'm afraid I would be too emotional about it, LOL.

Weird Fact: Who knew that Weight Watchers had their own brand of wine? Weight Watchers Riesling? WTF?!

We shall finish this shocking post with a wonderful poem by G.K Chesterton titled "The Logical Vegetarian." Here's a stanza:
No more the milk of cows
Shall pollute my private house
Than the milk of the wild mares of the Barbarian
I will stick to port and sherry,
For they are so very, very,
So very, very, very, Vegetarian.

OTE Over The Edge - Negativland MP3s

This is a general request to the entire world that googles the above keywords. I'm terribly unhappy with the bitrate of the KPFA podcasts. They contain too many artifacts and wayy too much compression. At the same time, I've already spent probably $500 on Negativland/Don Joyce material, and I just don't have the money to fork over $13 for every radio performance.

So.... if anybody out there has full, complete MP3s of Over The Edge and would like to trade for the dozen or so shows that I have, let me know. I've got lots of other things to exchange, as well. Enquire within.....

Jesus was a Loser and a Coward

Lazy Sunday afternoon. Thought I would update my web site, but after about 2 hours decided I didn't like the changes and abandoned the whole thing. For some reason ended up on the Wikipedia entry for Tori Amos via random, thoughtless web browsing (something I rarely do), and somehow ended up on this site as well:

http://www.yhwh.com/Thoughts/jesusloser.htm

All I have to say is... wow. I'm not a Christian, and I find Western Religions in general to be a waste of braincells. But wow. Great fucking article.

New Family Member, Kristopher :)

I'm an uncle for the 3rd time, it seems. This little guy looks like quite a bundle of joy; he's surely going to drive his two older sisters nuts some day!

Way to go sis! I love you all so much!
