Recording / Remixes

Due to the holidays and a recent extensive illness, updates to this journal have been few and far between. Here are a couple of noteworthy things:

People's Glorious Five Year Plan is in the middle of an intensive demo recording session. Three to four songs will be included in this demo, and there is hope that great things will come of it.

Novachild has also been working on another remix for Paul McKendrick, a warm, emotional singer/songwriter from Canada. The latest remix is titled 'Trapped,' and you can download the mp3 right here.

Novachild also has a live performance scheduled at Saffron for December 30. It will hopefully include some other musicians, lighting, etc. It is planned to be a 60-minute ambient/IDM set. More info later.

Stay tuned!

Dreams of Self Indulgence

Last night, the quirkiest dream ran through my brain as I slept not-so-peacefully in my state of illness.

A contest. A race. Three contestants in a large outdoor supermarket. The shelves are several stories tall, with ladders, slides and strange tunnels filled with a white sandy substance. It stretches for a mile. The object of the game is to run through the aisles and up and down the 'shelves' and knock down merchandise. From groceries to stereos to I-Beams and PVC pipes and everything inbetween.

A lot like a Shopping Spree, only much much grander in scale.

So the first contestant begins. The first contestant is methodical, modest, and terribly slow. He doesn't even go up the ladders, just takes things from the first few shelves and knocks them to the floor. Eventually his time runs out.

Second contestant. He runs up to the top, knocking things off everywhere, diving through tunnels, going down slides like some sort of crazy acrobat. Things are flying everywhere in a grand display of gluttonous need. We are all impressed... and eventually his time runs out.

Third contestant. Me. At first, I recreate what the second contestant was doing, but an epiphany strikes me once I reach the top of one of the multi-storied shelves. I grapple a center beam and rock back and forth until the entire fucking shelf falls over, and as it's hitting the shelf next to it, I dive into the air and catch the top of the next shelf and keep riding the wave until all of them have crashed to the ground in a grand display of unbridled chaos and destruction. At the end of my turn, I am a mile away from where I need to be to claim my winning title, so I hop in a car and begin the trek back to the beginning.

And before I can get there, I wake up coughing.....

Paul McKendrick Remix

I know... it's been awhile since a useful post has come from me. I've been busy, sick, busy, sick, and busy. So this came as a big surprise today when Paul sent me this link (along with an email saying that his last package was returned because my PO Box has been locked... grrr).

I love the positive comments, and I'm sure I will be revisiting this particular mix in the future. Paul is sending me another collection of recorded tracks for another remix, and I honestly can't wait to see what comes out of it.

Meanwhile, back to bed, back to warm sheets and endless reruns of old TV shows on DVD, but first I've got to hear the rest of this new, fantastic CD from Kate Bush. She's come out of musical retirement, it seems, and with perhaps the best collection of music she's ever recorded! (so far my favorite song is Pi - the chorus of the song is the entire known string of numbers). So if you have ever loved Kate Bush (or even if you haven't), go get Aerial now! It's beautiful, moving, odd and very fulfilling.

Under the Weather

The recent lack of posts is mostly due to the fact that we've been ill. This is not something I'd want to wish upon anyone, but it should clear within a few days.

If anyone lives in Tulsa, they can catch PG5YP doing a small set or two at Saffron's Open Mic night tonight. We're bringing OUR sound reinforcement system, which means no more crackling and distorting through the house system. It'll be grand. Open Mic starts around 8:00, but we won't be going on until 9:00 or later. Still, there are some great talents who show up for this thing, so you might come check it out :)

Another Dorky Quiz

You Are Edward From "Edward Scissorhands."

You are very shy and often misunderstood. Innocent, sweet, and artistic, you like to pass your days by daydreaming and expressing yourself through the arts. You are a truly unique individual. Unfortunately, you are quite lonely, and few people truly understand you.

Repost: Novachild: New Music

Reposting this from Novachild's Myspace Bulletin:
New Novachild Music for Download

I've been so busy with the band that I've not had a lot of time for solo composition. However, here are a couple of tracks I've done lately.

The first one is a rough rough draft of a new ambient piece called "Wild Continent." It needs a little something extra, I think; I plan on overlaying some e-bowed guitar, perhaps, or maybe a flute. Regardless, it's enjoyable in the rough shape that it's in.

Wild Continent (mp3)

The second offering is my remix of Saskia's "The One" on her fortcoming CD "Deep." Definitely looking for some feedback. It's not my particular style of music, but I would love to win this contest (and you guys can probably help me there)

Saskia - The One (Novachild Remix) (mp3)

Neither track is inherently reflective of my 'style.' But I still enjoyed making them!

For those of you who didn't know that I'm a musician, consider this an opportunity to discover one of my greatest passions. With 2 albums and 1 EP under my belt (one of which is freely downloadable from www.novachild.com), I don't plan on quitting any time soon.

Cheers

Photos of Casa Bonita

Casa Bonita (Tulsa) closed its doors this Summer. It was a sad affair, but at the same time it was a good opportunity to go and pay respects to a childhood memory.

Unfortunately, very few of my pics came out. The cheap Polaroid disposable camera I purchased was flawed, and Walgreen's was only able to harvest a few relatively viewable images from the roll. While I continue to mourn this sad fact, here are a few of the surviving photos.

Novachild and the big Pink Gorilla.
The Gorilla contained the same 'actor' that put on the suit for the very first time,
and he was feeling a bit overwhelmed on this chaotic, sad, excited evening.

The creepy Fortune Teller lady.
Insert a couple of tokens, and she moves her stiff hands
over some tarot cards before spitting out your 'fortune.'

The last time I will probably ever see the Treasure Room.
Shortly before this photo was taken, someone or a group of
someones vandalized the room, bent the iron rods in the
windows and smashed the treasure chest. Bastards.

And so it goes.
