Red White and Blue

(or "So You wonder Why Some Apes Stayed Behind")

Quite A long way from Eden
The serpent finds a home
in hearts cold as nails
in beggar's coffins.
in Veins full of black, sweet oil,
and eyes wide with righteous fever.

In the foggy blackness
Does Satan unfurl her
steamy RED branches
To embrace or embody
our war-torn stratosphere
Tangled with Unintelligent Design
in glorious WHITE plumes
from death's burning reverence

Merely to sneak a circus
of fantastic skeletons
into the deep BLUE folds
of desert earth?

Quite a long way from Eden
Greedy, pious goblins
Scheme to evoke a fitting end
to sabotage what humankind
Pieced together from the entrails
of a hasty resume'

What a grand performance!
Fictitious structures!
Layers and layers of invented wonder
waiting to be unearthed by
meager human hands!

The sun is setting,
On the ground the cities glow
like baby universes
colliding and retracting
Men and women flood the streets
feeling and retreating from
the pain of living

Quite a long way from Eden
The serpent finds a home
where the ice caps melted
where the city was erected
where the tribes were scattered
where the people stopped living
and settled instead
on dying
a little bit
every day

I will do my very best. And if you are in Tulsa, I will be the feature poet at Gypsy Coffeehouse on July 12 (tentative). I will also be on the Seeker's Free Stage at the Blue Dome Festival this weekend (1st and Detroit, I believe). The Blue Dome fest is a reaction to Mayfest, a way to provide local artists a venue without charging them $450 a booth. So come out and support it if you can, and be a part of it even.

Cheers!
