HitchHiker's Guide #1? Wow.

I'm really not sure how to take this:

"Hitchhiker's Guide" Blasts Off at Number One

On one hand, it would be nice to see the next book made into a movie (which is probably inevitable at this point). On the other hand, I really didn't enjoy the movie very much. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. One could still feel the spirit of Douglas Adams woven into the film, but the bottom sort of drops out about halfway through - and is only saved by Bill Nighy's much anticipated appearance. DNA's witticisms are mostly 'dumbed down' for the US audience, and important scenarios left unfinished (& don't get me started on how horrible I thought Mos Def was).

All in all, the film was nothing new. I enjoyed the look of the Vogons, and the new Marvin costume, and the several nods to the fans (esp the Eagles song and the appearance of the original Marvin). But in the end, that's all I felt the movie was. Just a big wave to the fans and a watered down version of the story dragging behind all the fanwank.

All in all, I still prefer the low low budget television miniseries to this film. But if there is a sequel, I'll have to go see it. Much in the same way that I have to see all the Star Wars movies in the theater, regardless of how amazingly horrible they can be.
